Howrah Bridge - Engineering Marvel

Calcutta boasts the third largest cantilever bridge in the world. Its real importance, however, lies in the fact that it serves as Calcutta's gateway to the wese, being the city's only bridge spanning the Hooghly. Taking 7 years to build, it cost $10,000,000. It towers 310 feet as the city's highes structure, is 2,150 feet long with a center span of 1,500 feet. It was completed in 1942, opened in February, 1943.

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

After his fateful last race on Sunday, an emotional Michael Schumacher bid goodbye to Formula One racing forever. The champ was left struggling for words at Sao Paulo as his career came to a dramatic end at the Brazilian Grand Prix. He had enough reasons to. Michael Schumacher’s figures speak for themselves: 250 Grands Prix (second only to Ricardo Patrese’s 256) and an all-time high of 91 victories (next best is Alain Prost with 51); seven titles (again, an all-time high ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio who had won five); another all-time high of 1,369 points (ahead of Prost’s 798.5) and 68 Pole positions (ahead of even Aryton Senna who had 65); and 76 fastest laps (Prost with 41 is the next best).

Fans over Ferrari

“Today, my racing career comes to an end and, obviously it’s a special moment for me and I am proud to have lived my career with some fantastic people - namely everyone who is a part of the Ferrari family,” said the German. “There is so much to say - I can’t find the right words. The things I will miss are probably the fans and in every moment, they have been behind me and always supported me. Their support helped me perform, especially in moments when it was difficult. Over the years, that was immensely important. I can only say thank you to those people and those fans,” he added. The seven-time world champion finished his career with one of his most stirring drives to come home in fourth place, cruelly just off the podium. But he still managed to find a metaphor that brought symmetry to his 15 years of sustained and extraordinary racing that has already become a legend.

500 metres of destiny

“In a way, it’s a closed circle now for me, because my Formula One career started and finished after 500 metres which was, maybe, a symbol of what happened yesterday.” His words referred to the fact that his first race and his last were hit by problems that wrecked his hopes of victory. But his actions on the track in his Ferrari spoke volumes for his talent, speed, courage and determination as he stormed from the back of the field, after a puncture, to finish fourth. “The race was chaotic, I think that’s the right word,” he said, as rival and second-time champion Fernando Alonso began his celebrations, having finished second behind his Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.

Fait accompli

“We really had a superb car today from the pure speed we could have lapped everybody. So I have to say it was the perfect end to the season in terms of car performance, but for me it didn’t work out well.” Schumacher offered warm congratulations to Massa for his first triumph on Brazilian soil. “I’m very happy for Felipe who drove an amazing race,” he said. “It’s great for him to be the first Brazilian to win at Interlagos since Ayrton Senna. It would have been nice if I could at least have made it to the podium alongside him. “I would also like to congratulate Fernando.”

The Ferrari finish

In a way, Schumacher’s finish was a wee bit like Zidane: sour and unexpected. But not bizarre and disgraced! If anything, he proved in the end why he will be without a parallel in F1 for a long, long time. “Today, my race was compromised after the puncture I picked up on lap nine, when I had just passed (Giancarlo) Fisichella. I was unaware of it until the team told me about it on the radio. I can’t really judge it - as I haven’t seen anything. I was told my tyre was cut by his car, but I didn’t feel it. The only thing I felt was in turn two when the tyre didn’t really work any more.” He said he enjoyed his climb back through the field. “My car was amazing,” Schumacher said, and added that his best memory was the year 2000 title win. “We had a lot of hard work and setbacks so when we finally won, it was the most beautiful championship” . Schumi had 72 wins with Ferrari and 19 before that with Benetton-Renault.
My way, the right way

But he does not have regrets. “There were things I would do differently, but if I went into that it would get too intense and we don’t have time right now. But there is the song My Way and I think that is true right now. My dad was happy to see me after the race and he said: ‘Finally, it’s over”.

Lemon Battery

Creating a battery from a lemon is a common project in many science text books. Successfully creating one of these devices is not easy.Batteries consist of two different metals suspended in an acidic solution. Copper and Zinc work well as the metals and the citric acid content of a lemon will provide the acidic solution.Batteries like this will not be able to run a motor or energize most light bulbs. It is possible to produce a dim glow from an LED.
The picture at the top of this page shows a basic lemon battery, a lemon, copper penny and zinc coated nail.
The lemon: A large, fresh, "juicy" lemon works best.The nail : Galvanized nails are coated in zinc. I used a 2" galvanized common nail.The penny: Any copper coin will work. (Canadian pennies from 1960 - 2001 all worked)

Creating the battery : Insert a penny into a cut on one side of the lemon. Push a galvanized nail into the other side of the lemon. The nail and penny must not touch.

This is a single cell of a battery. The zinc nail and the copper penny are called electrodes. The lemon juice is called electrolyte.All batteries have a " +" and "-" terminal. Electric current is a flow of atomic particles called electrons. Certain materials , called conductors, allow electrons to flow through them. Most metals (copper, iron) are good conductors of electricity. Electrons will flow from the "-" electrode of a battery, through a conductor, towards the "+" electrode of a battery. Volts (voltage) is a measure of the force moving the electrons. (High voltage is dangerous!)

I have connected a volt meter to our single cell lemon battery. The meter tells us this lemon battery is creating a voltage of 0.906 volts.Unfortunately this battery will not produce enough current (flowing electrons) to light a bulb.

To solve this problem we can combine battery cells to create higher voltages. Building more lemon batteries and connecting them with a metal wire from "+" to "-" adds the voltage from each cell.
The two lemon batteries above, combine to produce a voltage of 1.788 volts. This combination still does not create enough current to light a small bulb. Note the red wire connecting the batteries is joined from "+" (penny) to "-" (galvanized nail).

Four lemon batteries create a voltage of 3.50 volts. We should be able to light up a small device like an LED (Light Emitting Diode).Note the connecting wires go from "+" to "-" on each battery.

LED
To turn on an LED you must determine the "+" and "-" connections. If you look closely at the red plastic base of an LED you will notice a "flat" spot (indicated by arrow above). The wire that comes out beside the flat spot must connect to the "-" side of a battery, the other wire to the "+" side.
Important information about LEDs : LEDs are designed to work at very low voltages (~ 2V) and low currents. They will be damaged if connected to batteries rated at over 2 volts. LEDs require resistors to control current when used with batteries rated at over 2 volts. Lemon batteries produce low current. It is OK to connect an LED to a lemon battery.
In the above image, electrons flow from the "-" (nail) end of our lemon battery through the LED (making it glow) then back to the "+" (penny) end of the battery. This is an electronic circuit. The LED glows dimly with this configuration.

Improving your battery.
The quality of the copper and zinc can be a problem for a battery like this. Pennies in particular are rarely pure copper.Try substituting a length of 14 gauge copper wire (common house wire) for the penny. Experiment with different lengths and configurations of electrodes. Other sources of zinc and copper may be found in the plumbing supply department of a hardware store.

The first battery was created in 1799 by Alessandro Volta . Today batteries provide the power for an amazing variety of devices, everything from flashlights to robots, computers, satellites and cars. Inventors and researchers continue to improve the battery, designing batteries that last longer and that are more friendly to our environment.
Understanding how batteries actually work requires a knowledge of chemistry. The most important factor in battery design is the electrical relationship between the two metals used in the battery. Some metals give electrons away while other metals accept extra electrons. Chemists have investigated metals and created an "electric potential" table comparing different metals.

DUST ART

When the dust gets thick on the back window of his Mini Cooper, Scott Wade uses it as a canvas to create temporary works of art. Among his creations was a copy of C.M. Coolidge's 'A Friend in Need,' better known as dogs playing poker.

Wade used his finger and other implements to etch this homage to Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa.'

Wade lives off the unpaved Roadrunner Road north of San Marcos, which dusts the back windows of his car and gives him the canvases to create his own works of art.

A portrait of Kinky Friedman on the back of the Mazda driven by Wade's wife, Robin Wood, was featured on the gubernatorial candidate's Web site.

A collage of wildlife decorates the Mini Cooper's window.

Wade's creations attract admirers wherever he goes.

Who needs a frost-covered window when you've got road dust to create a Christmas scene?

A gimme-capped John Kelso was the subject of one window portrait.

Besides his finger, Wade uses traditional art tools, such as paintbrushes, and unconventional ones, like a chewed Popsicle stick, to make his drawings.

Wade takes pride in his creations, but he knows that with one good shower, his work will just wash away.

Hydropolis: The world’s first underwater luxury hotel

Wow, check out this amazing idea that is about to unravel within the next year or so. The world’s first luxury underwater hotel, Hydropolis, is at this moment under construction in Dubai. The expected opening date is at the end of 2007, which is quite amazing considering the grandiose vision.

The hotel will have two parts. The land station, will serve as the welcoming area, marine biology research centre, restaurant, and cinema among other things. From the lowest level, hotel guests will be transported down towards Hydropolis by using a train system.
The designer and developer of this project, Joachim Hauser, has great plans for similar ventures in the future, and Hydropolis is the first step in accomplishing them.
“We want to create the first ever faculty for marine architecture because I believe that the future lies in the sea, including the future of city planning. I am certain that one day, a whole city will be built in the sea. Our aim is to lay the first mosaic by colonising the sea.”
This indeed sounds and feels like something straight out of a futuristic sci-fi novel, and yet it will soon become a reality. Even though Hauser’s vision of allowing underwater living to become a regular occurrence might come to pass, I have a feeling it might not happen very quickly, considering that it cost around 550 million Euros to get Hydropolis up and running.

It is not as if the saree can ever go out of fashion.
Truly, it is amazing that a garment,
discovered more than 5,000 years ago,
still holds sway over people.
To describe the number of ways
it is worn in just one country like ours
would require penning 10 volumes.
There are the Gujarati, Bengali,
Maharastrian, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh,
Assamese styles.... the list is endless.

But today, the traditional Indian drape
is worn in ways and combinations never imagined before.
The innovations are not confined
to halter-neck or noodle-strapped blouses
made popular by Mandira Bedi once.

Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na made the
saree the sexiest wear in a woman's wardrobe.
But, more was to come.
Bikini blouses next must have seemed
like the boldest turn the saree
could ever take but it seems that's not all.

Sarees are being matched with
churidhars and this ensemble is
flaunted regularly on the ramps.
Not just that, the petticoat is not just
a garment to tuck in your pleats.
While Satya Paul popularised contrast
or patterned petticoats,
Rina Dhaka brought the sequined
ones into vogue.
For a figure-hugging effect,

Drawing inspiration from fishtail skirts,
Tarun Tahiliani has created the fishtail petticoats.

The IBM PC was announced to the world on 12 August 1981, helping drive a revolution in home and office computing.

The PC came in three versions; the cheapest of which was a $1,565 home computer.

The machine was developed by a 12-strong team headed by Don Estridge. We take a look at changes in home computing over the last 25 years.

IBM Unleashed

The $1,565 IBM PC bought a computer and a keyboard. There was no monitor included and disc drives were optional. It included Microsoft's BASIC programming language.

"This is the computer for just about everyone who has ever wanted a personal system at the office, on the university campus or at home," said CB Rogers Jr of IBM at the time of release.

Computer Costs

IBM's machine cost between $1,565, for a home model, and $4,500, for a machine designed for the office.

The cheaper model would cost ï¿½1,872 today, taking 25 years of adjustments in the retail price index into account.

So what kind of PC can you buy for ï¿½1,872 today? What are the differences between the first PC and the latest PCs?

Computing Power

The first IBM PC had a 4.7Mhz processor and the cheapest model had 16K of memory.

Disk drives were an optional extra but each 5.25inch disk could hold 160K of data.

The machines could display four different colours of graphics and 24 different colours for text. It also included a built-in mono speaker for music and audio.

Future Shock

Consumers are spoilt for choice if they have ï¿½1,872 to spend on a PC. This machine, the Area-51 5500, has a dual core 1.8GHz processor - more than 765 times more powerful than the IBM.

It has 1GB of memory - 65,000 times more capacity than the IBM. The 160GB hard drive is equivalent to more than a million floppy disks used by the 1981 machine.

Games

The IBM PC launched with rudimentary games and tools, including a music tutorial.

There was also a game called Microsoft Adventure. It was a text adventure game with no graphics and a home version of similar games that had been played on more powerful university computers.

High Definition

Modern PCs are capable of running games in high definition and with surround sound.

The ï¿½1,800 computer comes with a dedicated graphics card, which would be needed to play a game like the one shown, called Crysis.The graphics card itself contains vastly more processing power than the original PC.

Impact Of The PC

Microsoft supplied the disk operating system (DOS) to PCs and it became an essential part of machines worldwide.

The PC also helped standardise business information; ensuring that data on one PC could be read on another.

There are now a billion PCs in operation globally.

The Donkey Attitude

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.

Pretty soon, Everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

Lemon Battery

Creating a battery from a lemon is a common project in many science text books. Successfully creating one of these devices is not easy.Batteries consist of two different metals suspended in an acidic solution. Copper and Zinc work well as the metals and the citric acid content of a lemon will provide the acidic solution.Batteries like this will not be able to run a motor or energize most light bulbs. It is possible to produce a dim glow from an LED.
The picture at the top of this page shows a basic lemon battery, a lemon, copper penny and zinc coated nail.

The lemon: A large, fresh, "juicy" lemon works best.The nail : Galvanized nails are coated in zinc. I used a 2" galvanized common nail.The penny: Any copper coin will work. (Canadian pennies from 1960 - 2001 all worked)

Creating the battery : Insert a penny into a cut on one side of the lemon. Push a galvanized nail into the other side of the lemon.

The nail and penny must not touch.

This is a single cell of a battery. The zinc nail and the copper penny are called electrodes. The lemon juice is called electrolyte.All batteries have a " +" and "-" terminal. Electric current is a flow of atomic particles called electrons. Certain materials , called conductors, allow electrons to flow through them. Most metals (copper, iron) are good conductors of electricity. Electrons will flow from the "-" electrode of a battery, through a conductor, towards the "+" electrode of a battery. Volts (voltage) is a measure of the force moving the electrons. (High voltage is dangerous!)

I have connected a volt meter to our single cell lemon battery. The meter tells us this lemon battery is creating a voltage of 0.906 volts.Unfortunately this battery will not produce enough current (flowing electrons) to light a bulb.

To solve this problem we can combine battery cells to create higher voltages. Building more lemon batteries and connecting them with a metal wire from "+" to "-" adds the voltage from each cell.

The two lemon batteries above, combine to produce a voltage of 1.788 volts. This combination still does not create enough current to light a small bulb. Note the red wire connecting the batteries is joined from "+" (penny) to "-" (galvanized nail).

Four lemon batteries create a voltage of 3.50 volts. We should be able to light up a small device like an LED (Light Emitting Diode).Note the connecting wires go from "+" to "-" on each battery.

LED
To turn on an LED you must determine the "+" and "-" connections. If you look closely at the red plastic base of an LED you will notice a "flat" spot (indicated by arrow above). The wire that comes out beside the flat spot must connect to the "-" side of a battery, the other wire to the "+" side.

Important information about LEDs : LEDs are designed to work at very low voltages (~ 2V) and low currents. They will be damaged if connected to batteries rated at over 2 volts. LEDs require resistors to control current when used with batteries rated at over 2 volts. Lemon batteries produce low current. It is OK to connect an LED to a lemon battery.

In the above image, electrons flow from the "-" (nail) end of our lemon battery through the LED (making it glow) then back to the "+" (penny) end of the battery. This is an electronic circuit. The LED glows dimly with this configuration.

>Improving your battery.
The quality of the copper and zinc can be a problem for a battery like this. Pennies in particular are rarely pure copper.Try substituting a length of 14 gauge copper wire (common house wire) for the penny. Experiment with different lengths and configurations of electrodes. Other sources of zinc and copper may be found in the plumbing supply department of a hardware store.
